CSM Certification Training Overview

3Back’s Certified Scrum Master (CSM) training bundle+ provides the tools and information necessary to help you get started with Scrum at your own company. Through a combination of robust simulations, hands-on experience, and high-quality instruction, students will learn the fundamentals of Scrum and how to facilitate, coach, and lead an agile project.

Scrum Master training is 100% online and hosted on a learning management platform. There are no required software applications or additional training materials needed.

Course Topics Include:

  • Overview of Scrum and Agile Practices
  • Scrum Roles, Ceremonies, and Artifacts
  • The ScrumMaster Role
  • Building and Guiding the Team
  • Stories and the Backlog
  • Scrum in the Organization

First, The Certified ScrumMaster Course. You will take an online course that teaches you about Scrum Mastering and verifies that you have achieved the Learning Objectives the Scrum Alliance has established. You will learn about the three main topics in Scrum: People, Product, and Process.

Second, 4 Open Office sessions (4 hours each) offered by the instructors. Each of these ‘Office Hours’ will be on a specific topic: one of People, Product, Process, or Extras (Scaling, Project Management, etc). You can mix and match these as you please; you can take one of each, the same one 4 times, or anything in between.

Third, Scrum Study Guide CSM Test Prep Course (a $99 value). You will take a short, online, course preparing you for the Scrum Alliance Test. It has a short description of scrum, two sample tests, and an organized collection of excerpts from the Scrum Guide and the Agile Manifesto that is guaranteed to contain all the information you need to pass. There is no surprise that our student’s pass rate is so high! Along with this course, you will receive a PDF of the “Scrum Study Guide Test Prep”, which contains the contents of this course.

CSM Certification Reviews

I highly recommend 3Back!

Christopher La Via

I've taken courses through 3Back in the past and returned to take additional courses because I loved the instructors, content, and convenience. With the pandemic, it has become critical to be able to take courses remotely. The remote Zoom-led courses were still very interactive, and the instructors ran the course very well. I highly recommend 3Back to anyone.

Very Impressed!

Andrea Feschenko

I took the virtual CSM Course and was very impressed! The course was engaging and I learned a lot. You get a TON of useful content to use during the course and beyond. I was able to easily pass my CSM test after taking this course. Dan Rawsthorne was our instructor and had an endless amount of knowledge/experience to share. Highly recommend!

Money well spent!

Christel Ebenson

Money well spent! Dan is a great facilitator/instructor. I especially appreciated how he uses real-world examples to illustrate the points in the class, it made it really easy to grasp the concepts.

5 stars for a great program!

Adam Steinberger

I attended the CSM course run by Dan Rawsthorne. His class was really informative and it helped me to pass the exam with 47/50 questions answered correctly. I look forward to working with 3Back again in the future when it's time for my advanced certification. 5 stars for a great program and for all the help.

Great Class!

Liza Gonzalez

Great class! Doug kept us all engaged even though it was all online. Lots of great information to take back and use in my current role. I will definitely use 3Back for my next certification.

  • How do I become a Certified ScrumMaster?

If you would like to become a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), you will need to attend a CSM course taught by an approved trainer. After the course, you will be eligible to take the Certified ScrumMaster exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive your certification.

  • How and when do I take the CSM exam?

After completing your CSM course, your instructor will notify the Scrum Alliance that you are now eligible to take the exam. You will then receive an email from Scrum Alliance that includes a link to create your login credentials. The first step will be to take the exam. The exam is online and non-proctored, so you can take it at your convenience from your home or work anytime within 90 days of your course. Once the test is complete, you will be asked to accept a license agreement and setup your online profile. It typically takes 1-2 days after course completion to receive your welcome email from the Scrum Alliance. Please note, although you have 90 days during which to take your exam, you must take the exam in its entirety during one sitting. You will not be able to stop and restart the exam.

  • What if I fail the CSM exam?

Although 3Back students have a pass rate of over 99%, in the event that you should need to retake the exam, a second attempt is included at no cost. Additional attempts are $25 each. Please be aware that the exam is designed and administered by the Scrum Alliance. While we have done our best to provide the most up to date information, we do suggest checking the Scrum Alliance directly for additional details or confirmation of the above.

  • Do I have to pay extra for the exam?

Your initial exam fee is included in your course registration. If necessary, the cost of a second attempt at the exam is also included. Additional attempts are $25 each. Also, if you do not take the exam within 90 days of your course, you will be required to pay a $25 fee to take the exam. Please be aware that the exam is designed and administered by the Scrum Alliance. While we have done our best to provide the most up-to-date information, we do suggest checking the Scrum Alliance directly for additional details or confirmation of the above.

  • More than 90 days has passed since my CSM course. Can I still take the exam?

Yes. However, you will be required to pay a $25 exam fee since your 90-day window has elapsed.

  • What is the Scrum Alliance?

The Scrum Alliance is the world’s largest, oldest and most recognized Scrum certification organization. 3Back is a Registered Education Provider for the Scrum Alliance and therefore approved to teach courses that will lead to Scrum Alliance issued certifications.

  • Can I get PDUs, SEUs and/or CEUs for this class? How many? How do I claim my PDUs?

Yes, our CSM course is worth 14 PDUs each. As a Registered Education Provider for the Scrum Alliance, our CSM course is worth 14 SEUs as well (7 SEUs per day). In addition, our Minneapolis courses offered in partnership with Normandale Community College are worth 1.4 CEUs. For more information about obtaining CEUs for your course, please contact Normandale Community College directly.

To claim your PDUs, log into your PMI account at www.pmi.org and complete the PMI PDU Self Reporting Form. For more information about obtaining PDUs, please contact PMI directly at 855-746-4849 or customercare@pmi.org.

  • What is required for the CSM Certification renewal in 2 years?

20 SEUs need to be completed in 2 years time and payment fee of $100 to the Scrum Alliance must be made, before the CSM license can be renewed. See the link for more information on Claiming SEUs. You can also use 3Back Resources to read our publications and receive SEUs under Category E.

  • What is On-Demand with office hours?

On-Demand is a blended approach of both instructor-led and independent, self-paced learning. As a learner, you can find your own rhythm and you choose how fast you go. You have up to 6 months to complete the course. (see our policy page for details).

The typical Module includes 20-60 minutes of reading (depending on your reading speed), and a multiple-choice quiz. After you complete these, you need to work with 1-2 StudyBuddies to discuss the module/quiz and do one or more scenario-based exercises. Each module will take about 1-3 hours of your time, and will require you to work with StudyBuddies (either someone in the course or outside of the course). You also need to attend 4 office hour sessions, each 4 hours.
